N.I. Sheep Breeders exhibit in Russia
N.I. Sheep Breeders have just returned from a trade mission to Russia. Representatives of the Charollais, Ile de France, Suffolk & Texel Breeds were accompanied by Jelmer Hania, export manager with L.M.C at The Agrofarm Agricultural Trade Exhibition held in the VIV Exhibition Centre in Moscow.
On the day previous to the show the N.I. delegates met with leading sheep breeders, scientists and members of The Ministry of Rural Affairs where they discussed the role N.I. sheep could have in Russia. The sheep flock in Russia has fallen from 60 million head in 1990 to 20 million at present due in part to the fall in wool prices which was the main output from the Russian flock. Leading sheep breeders see the UK meat breeds as a way of increasing the production of food and income. The talks with these influential people were positive and the N.I. delegation would hope that it will lead to progressing the export of sheep to Russia. At the Trade Fair there was a steady flow of visitors showing a genuine interest in N.I. sheep.
